Maybe the white lead is for the dimmer switch. When I replaced my head
unit, I couldn't figure out which lead was for the dimmer switch, and just
buttoned up the job without it. I now suffer from a super-bright night time
display. 

Sorry about no other info. I should have taken some notes when I did the
install, especially considering the amount of time and testing of
techniques to fit the unit.
