re: 100LS (longish)
Enough bashing of the poor lamented 100LS. Having owned and still owning
a Fiat or two, I can assure you that unless you've owned a particular
car there's no point in badmouthing them.
My folks purchased two Audi 100LSs new and had little or no trouble with
them. Another poster was right when he discussed the poor quality of the
70s cars throughout. Remember, this was back in the days of points,
Solex carbs and manual chokes. Volkswagen didn't even make a water
cooled car, and the Japanese had just blatantly copied the 2002 in the
510 sedan. My folks went to German cars after the Corvair was killed
off, and couldn't see the sense of buying a tinny Japanese car for the
high prices they were starting to get in the mid seventies. The 100LS
came at a time when the US competition was the Vega, Pinto and Hornet.
Thus, in this light, one might deduce that the 100LS was quite a radical
car.
Recently, I had the pleasure of driving a nice original Fox, a car I
always admired as a pre-teen spending time at the dealer scarfing
brochures. The car was still fun to drive, offered decent performance,
and the handling was only limited by the too-small tires. I enjoyed the
lack of heavy, unneeded items like power windows and heated mirrors. And
nothing under the hood I haven't seen before.
Be proud of your heritage, not ashamed of it :)
