'98 Carlisle Import Auto Show
Yes, Phil, Carlisle *used* to have the only State-owned brewery and chain of
pubs in the UK, ( alcohol was nationalised to stop munitions workers getting
too drunk to do their jobs during the 1914-18 War and nobody ever got round
to denationalising it afterwards) - until I think the 1970's, when Mrs
Thatcher got to know about this and decreed that it all be privatised at
once. Another of our quaint traditions gone forever !
A shame in many ways, as the State Brewery made very good beer and sold it
at some of the cheapest prices in the UK. Stylish interior decor was not
their strong point, though, - a bit like drinking in the Labour Exchange.
Apologies to non-UK Listers for these parochial reminiscences. Can find some
mandatory Audi content here - Carlisle UK has quite a big and pretty
amenable Audi dealership - Harper and Hebson. (The first-named owner was
originally apprenticed as a motor mechanic to my late father who was Service
Director of the local Rootes /Chrysler/ Talbot main dealers, so he has come
up in the world of motoring. Don't get any discounts, though - remain
incognito - probably would get surcharged or thrown out otherwise ! )

And used to have (does it still?) the only state-owned brewery in the UK.
