I had the exact same symptom once in my '91 80Q. I was driving in
Baltimore, nearing the end of an 8-hour trip. It was hot, well into
the 90s, and the car was quite hot, too. 

Coming out of the harbor tunnel I noticed that the car completely shut
down power as I hit 3k RPM. I kept it in 5th gear, and crept to the
toll booth, completely expecting to have to call someone for help. 

As I was almost to my destination, and as the car seemed fine below
3k, I decided to continue. It never did it again. That was almost
three years ago.

I would love to know what it was, in case I ever see it happen again.
