tranny noise

I've got a noise, I think from the tranny, which has been getting louder lately. It's a bit hard to describe, but here goes:

When cold (colder=worse), I get a sort of metal-on-metal noise (not grinding really) when accelerating in 1st. It sounds like something spinning and hitting on something else. When I put the clutch down, it goes away. It only happens when it is in gear. Other clue: if I press the gear shift further into gear (forward in 1st), it makes the noise worse.

I don't really know much about the transmission/clutch, etc., so I have no idea what to think here. Any guesses would be appreciated.

It's a 91 200Q 5-speed.
