RE: Vacuum Pump
Someone recently asked some questions about vacuum pump removal.
Yes, there are only two nuts. If the o-ring is not relatively new,
get another one before starting. Disconnect the vacuum line
connection. Remove the pump and apply penetrating oil to the exposed
cover screws. Remove screws carefully and remove cover.
Clean exposed parts including especially the various plastic valves.
The parts seem to have only one orientation, but taking notes is
advised. Remove the internal oil buildup, but put a small amount of
fresh oil on everything before reassembly. (I don't know how much, if
any, oil is optimal, but since performing this cleaning and lubing on
mine, the start-up vacuum pump rattle has ended.) Reassemble the
pump.
Lube the pump drive shaft (cam follower). (I use new camshaft "honey"
lube.) It _may_ help to align the flat on the drive shaft to be "up".
Push the car slightly in a high gear, motor off, to adjust the
camshaft orientation to minimize the hight of the pump drive shaft.
(Be sure the car can't roll to far!!!) Reset the brake/shift lever.
Reinstall pump using the new o-ring, torque nuts, and reattach vacuum
line. I don't have the torque value at hand, but it is in the Bentley
in the engine section.
