A4 Remote entry programming

Does anyone know the procedure to enable the remote key transmitter to
work on a '97 A4?

My mother bought the fob from our dealer, at $160.  She expected the dealer
to program it for her.  They turned around and told her they couldn't
do it then, but that she could do it herself.  It involved something
with getting into the car, turning the key to the 'ON' position on
the ignition, pressing both buttons on the fob, and flipping the window
switches (don't ask ME...this is what she was telling me!!).  

And we used to joke about dancing around our cars at midnight, painted
blue and shaking a rubber chicken while chanting our promises to spend
$$$ on the car, to appease the Audi gods.  Geez, that almost seems tame
by comparison to the A4.  ;-)
