Air cleaner element renewal...

Changing my air filter last night was a real pain.  Has anyone developed
any quick and easy tricks for the likes of my '88 5kcsqw??  Fuel lines,
intake hose and pipe, turbo, etc....

I started by removing the intake mouth from the air cleaner housing.
This took way too long, because a self-adhesive heat shield with
reinforced backing, fiberglass, and aluminum spanned both pieces (on the
side facing the turbo).  Was this OEM, or did someone add it for good
measure??
