Dying Speedometer '88 5ktq

     Driving home last night the speedometer died a couple of times. I 
     believe it's just trying to copy the failure mode of the temperature 
     guage. Hey, they're right next to each other.
     
     When this happened on my ur-q I had to replace the drive cable that 
     runs from the transmission into the back of the guage. Is it a similar 
     mechanical setup on an '88 5ktq? It worked fine this morning so if 
     there's any preventative maintenance I can perform to keep it alive, 
     let me know?
