Just joined the digest,

Here's what I did to remove 17mm check plug on my '87 BMW 325is.

I bought a 17mmm hex wrench from Grainger Tool for $6.  Cut off a
1 inch section with my hacksaw.  Use 1 inch section in my 17mm socket
and presto a 17mm hex socket.

Worked  great.  Luckily I did not round off the corners wheI first tried
to use the wrench (allen key) by itself.
