Convert 5k aut. to manual (Was: Transmission types)
A few days ago i asked some questions regarding the best replacement
transmission for my '87 100CD 2.2E Aut.
Thanks for all answers. It seems that all Audi automatics are crap, so
now I am thinking about converting it into a manual - which is what I
would have bought anyway if I could have found one.
I suppose the task can be defined as:
1. Remove converter and install flywheel + clutch.
2. Remove automatic and install manual gearbox.
3. Replace driveshafts? Different?
4. Modify connection from accelerator pedal to throttle.
5. Install some kind of clutch aktuator.
To take point 5 first:
It seems there is not enough room for a clutch pedal, as the floor is
different in an automatic. I do not want to modify the floor. I
remember that the old NSU Ro80 had an electric clutch, operated with a
switch on the gearstick. Anyone BTDT retrofitting such a thing?
Point 1-4 can be neglected, if I choose to replace the engine at the
same time. Only questions are:
Does engine+transmission+(driveshafts) from a manual model fit
directly into an automatic?
Are there auxiliary parts that should go with it from the manual car?
(I can live without the little yellow arrow on the dashboard.)
If I am going to find a new engine, perhaps I should upgrade to a
165HP turbo (just exactly within the limits set by Danish
authorities). How much is involved in such an operation? Are there
165HP turbo models with K-Jetronic injection, or should I also
completely modify the injection system?
