Back seat groan--fuel pump dying?

I almost ran out of gas and the car started chugging--like a train--then
the next day after filling up I noticed this groan in the back seat.  When
I start the car the computer that indicates how many miles left to drive
starts at "E" and slowly increases the miles.  Is my fuel pump dying and
do I have to replace immediately?  I replaced the fuel pump relay already.
