brake lines
Contrary to my best efforts to get the bleed screw out of my brake caliper,
it broke off. It almost appears as if someone sprayed my right front wheel
well with corrosion promoter -- every nut/bolt/fastener that has anything
to do with the brakes on this corner of my car is stuck. The other three
corners resisted at first, but they all turned without stripping.
While removing the brake line for the front right (to remove the caliper) I
stripped the connectors from the hard copper brake line. The 3/4 brake
wrench rounded the bolts, so I finished them off with vise-grips. The
rubber line is also showing signs of aging, so I plan on replacing the
whole thing with stainless steel lines and connectors.
The UFO set-up has a hard copper line, then rubber, then hard copper again.
I currently need new connectors on the caliper portion of the hard copper
line. If I remove the rubber line completely, I think I will also end up
needing a new connector on the master cylinder
copper-line-to-wheel-well-rubber-hose junction, as well.
Here's my question: Do the brake repair specialist shops have some sort of
crimping tool that replaces the "nipple" on the copper line? Logic
suggests yes. I think I would have to cut the last 3 mm off of the copper
line, replace the connector, then have it re-crimped(or re-formed,
whatever).
Any BTDT's? Suggestions on where to buy stainless steel lines? TAP
advertises them, without specifics. Neuspeed has VW apps and reasonable
prices. These would be front and rear for a '91 200 qw, with UFO's.
