I don't know if you were around when I related my experience down in Saltdean
on the English South Coast last winter.
We only had 4" to 6" of snow all winter - all on the one day. I got to
Saltdean and turned into the street I wanted. The first 100 yards were almost
flat - the second 100 about 1 in 20, and the third _real_ steep - 1 in 10 or
better.
There was a police car drawn up across the bottom section, almost blocking the
road. I drew up, and one of the two policeman standing by the car ran over to
me. It was, as it always is, the young fresh-cheeked one.
"I'm sorry, Sir, we're only allowing four-wheel drives up the hill."
His colleague, considerably older, looked at me for a fraction of a second and
then clapped his hand over his eyes and banged his chin down against his
chest. Then he said, without looking up: "It's OK, Sir, I'll explain."
So I obliged with a typical TORSEN dry snow takeoff.
