RE: lock freeze
Avi,
The old temporary antifreeze was based on methanol, wood alcohol. It would
reduce the freezing point of the water/methanol mixture. As an antifreeze
it works quite well. It's at the other extreme where problems develop. At
higher temperatures the methanol evaporates from the coolant mixture
resulting in coolant with steadily decreasing methanol content and
progressively higher freezing points. The methanol is there only
temporarily, hence the name, Temporary Antifreeze.
Kerosene? Well, yes, kerosene is often used as "antifreeze" for diesel
fuel or home heating oil but not for your car's cooling system. Kerosene
does exactly the same thing for diesel fuel as ethylene glycol does for
water. Mixtures of chemicals have lower melting (freezing) points that do
pure chemicals.
