One wire sensor on top of the upper coolant hose stub. At least on MC
engines it is a variable resistance sensor which should read about
1000ohms with engine cold and about 100ohms when hot. My Haynes shows it
is an on/off switch, I understand it was like that on older engine
types.

It is the sender for the temp gauge and also provides "engine cold" and
"overheat" signals for A/C programmer, ECU and auto-check unit.
