Another data point:  My (old) water pump did the same thing.  About two
months ago, before my long trip, before my short crash, I changed the
timing belt/WP on the 5KCSTQ.  It had been done once before, and a
non-Audi part (forget to get the manufacturer) had been installed.  Timing
cover had a nice machined spot in it as well, with the same turkey sound.
Replacing the pump with one from Carlsen solved the problem.  It doesn't
look like much of a difference, probably too small to notice unless you put
them side by side and measure.
