I've repair this a couple of times on my '89 sport seats (same controls as
your '88). It is not a pain in the ass, and you don't have to remove the
seat to do it. After you loosen the trim panel (it will be flopping around
but still connected; to remove it entirely requires taking the seat out of
the car) check to see that the multipin connector on the back of the
paddle/joystick controls is full seated to the back of the paddle/joystick
controls. If it is not, push it on firmly and try the seat again. If the
seat works, use a zip tie to very firmly hold that connector on.
If the seat doesn't work, remove the connector and check for any loose
pins. You may have to solder the loose ones in. The only hard part is
verifying if the source of the problem is the connector or the switch. I
have only had loose pin problems, though.
