Find a good test hill, one the car has to pull hard to climb.  Advance
the timing until it just barely knocks, then back off a degree or two. 
Along the way you may find a "sweet spot" to your taste.  I've been up
to over 20 degrees on my 5 cyl coupe, but it didn't run smoothly there
with my new exhaust.  Probably at about 15 deg now.
