I am in the same boat. Same considerations. I live in San Diego,
occasionally go skiing, occasionslly see rain. My research of lister
BTDT and Tire Rack/Discount tests and employees opinions leaves two
brands on top:

Dunlop SP4000 A/S $99 for 225/50/ZR16 -a few years old
Pirelli P7000 Supersport $126 for 225/50/WR16 -new to the market
