Because the Audi radio uses what's called 'polarity tuning' (or something like that)
in its radios. The OE radio hunts and chooses bwtween the two fm antennas to pick up
the clearer signal. Designed by members of team UFO. Neat concept, works okay, no
aftermarket options for you.
To my knowledge, only Sony made and aftermarket unit that used this typed of tuner.
The AM antenna is in the left rear D-pillar, and is patched into the rear antenna
lead. Not the front. try switching the two and see if you don't get better am from
the rear.
