I see. I had a bad vacuum advance not only on my orignal distributor, but
also on the one I got from the junkyard. Sucked. All better now, put the
hall sender from my GTI dist. into the Audi distributor, put an old GTI
vac-advance on, also. Runs pretty well. Have the proper v-advance on the
way, should be here tomorrow. Thanks for all the help, both Scott and
everyone else - in looking for this problem, I fixed a whole bunch of other
stuff that was going to turn up sooner than later anyhow, like torn and
duct taped hoses, loose clamps, bad plugs, dead wires - it amazes me that
the car ran as well as it did. I guess I just upset the delicate balance
old cars sometimes have, where everything just works, but if you change one
thing, it all dies. Problem solved, car is running well again, although a
bit soft at high rpms - I think this might be the GTI vac advance, though,
as while visually identical to the Audi unit, it has a different part
number. The Hall senders share the same part number between GTI and 4kq.
Again, thanks to all who responded - I know a lot more about my new car,
and have cut a lot of potential problems off at the pass, so to speak! On
to more fun and less mundane stuff like tires and exhausts.....
