Hi Scott;
In typical Audi repair fashion, I carefully consulted the Bentley and
then did it the hard way - just started taking things apart until I got to
where I wanted to be!
The Bentley gives some guidance on removal on the instrument panel
(which is fairly easy if you don't have a driver's side air bag) and kind of
shows how the instrument panel is put together. Once the panel is out, you
have to remove the cover and the auto-check circuit board. The ground
jumpers are on the main printed circuit foil. The disassembly procedure is
fairly obvious once you have the panel and the Bentley in front of you. Once
you have taken it apart and put it together, it's amazing how clear the
Bentley illustration becomes!
From what I remember (and I had this thing in and out three times before
I found the problem!), the cover is held on by screws ( and several are
cleverly concealed as holding on something else). Once the screws are
removed, you have to gently pry up the cover to seperate an internal
connector. From there, things are staight-forward. You can even take the
opportunity to clean the inside of the panel glass!
