The PF 56 filter is still sold in KMart and Wall Mart for $ 2.89. There are
two different types though. One is made in UK and has the check valves and the
other in the US and does not.
Open the box and look at inside the filter and if you see the the spring
loaded valve it is the right one for most VWs and Audis. I have been using
these for 4 years and have not had a problem with them. One of the cars that
they (PF 56) were used on (84 5k 5sp) has  gone from 160k to 285k miles on
these filters and is still going pretty good.
