'85 5k dimmer

The instrument light dimmer is getting really flaky on my car, such
that when you turn the lights on the instrument lights are usually off.
It then requires great finesse wiggling the dimmer knob to a position
where the lights will stay on.  Is there an easy fix for this?  Or even
a way to bypass the dimmer for the time being?  (On this car, full bright
seems about right anyway... or maybe there's a bulb out that I'm not
aware of.. this is possible since it seems like there's a lot of shadow
on the gauges.)
