As cheaply as this thermoswitch can be had (under $10) I can't
quite imagine why this jerry-rigged solution is popping up.

If it's to test the rest of the circuit, you can do that by grounding
the lead that connects to the thermoswitch. On my '85 5kcstq,
the fans comes right on.
