V8 help- long
Phil- We have chatted before, I have been gone for about three weeks, and lost
most of my e mail. To complicate matters, I have just purchased a new lap top
of the DOS persuasion and am having a tough time converting from MAC. (I am
totally amazed at how this windows 95 concoction ever beat MAC in the market
place.) Now to the answers to your questions. 1) The only procedure in the
factory manual for the poly ribbed(serpentine) belt is the alignment of the
groved pulleys. Removal/replacement of the belt is described as follows: Pull
firmly down on the belt at the bottom. While holding down, install the setting
pin. (looks like there is a hole in the tensioner bracket to hold it in the
tensioned position) The PN for the pin is3204, but a short drill bit looks
like it would work. The central hydraulic pump and airconditioner pulleys must
line up. If they do not, remove the central hydraulic pump pulley and shim
appropriately. There is an alignment tool called out PN 3201 to check grove
alignment, but I think a good straight edge and MK 1 eyeball would sufice.
Ther is no belt tension spec, it appears the tensioner does the entire job.
Also, I recall reading in the training manual that this belt is designed to
last for the life of the engine (as opposed to the timing belt with a 60,000
mile limit). I can not help with the other problems, but thanks to Unca Bart,
I do have the factory manual. If you really want to help your friend, change
the timing belt for him!! BTW, to update you on your oil consumption query ,on
my latest highspeed trip(85+mph) I used 1 qt of oil per 1000 miles. The oil
was mobil 1 15w-50.
