If that's what I think it is, it's the brake pressure regulator spring.  One
end should be connected to the rear axle and the other end should go to an
eyelet on the brake pressure regulator mechanism.  The regulator is there to
lower the amount of hydraulic pressure applied to the rear brakes when the
suspension is extended (i.e., less weight on the rear wheels due to nosedive)
so that they don't lock up.  On the 5000's, this is supposed to be installed
under the left hand (drivers) side of the car, is it on the other side on the
4k's?  That would make sense because the fuel pump and filter are down there
on the 4k.  It could be that the regulator-to-body mount bolts have loosened
up and it's rattling around...never heard that one before, or of that spring
getting "tired", but...

I'd imagine you can get one from a dealer, try Linda at Carlsen Audi on the
vendor list.
