The story's gradually unfolding.  The assessor made the bodyshop do a 4-wheel 
alignment "to see if anything's bent".  Of course there's something "bent" - 
the RHD tie-rod took the full force.

It looks like the bodyshop specified a new steering rack, and added the labour 
charges for removing and refitting the engine to change the rack.
 
That, of course, got the assessor out of their hair.   And the car out of their 
workshop.

They do a lot of work for Audi.  I'm writing to Audi tomorrow ...
