Alternator Belt Tensioning (90Q)

When I bought the car ('88 90Q) last July, the alternator belt was making 
a little bit of noise because it wasn't tensioned properly.  It is still 
doing that today but is getting to be quite loud.  I hvae had two dead 
batteries in the past seven months when i don't drive the car for a few 
days. First of all, could the alternator be causing my dead batteries if 
the belt isn't tensioned properly?  Secondly, does anyone know an easy 
way of tensioning the belt?  I know how to remove the splash gaurd, to 
get below the engine.  I looked up to where the alternator is and could 
barely see anything cause it was so cramped.
