Your insurance plan should cover it if you have comprehensive insurance.
They'd rather replace your under-300-bucks windshield than have you drive
off the road, kill someone, and cause $30k of trouble.

Sand+dirt kicked up by other cars and trucks. Try sandblasting a piece of
glass...insto-amazo frosted glass. Same with "beach glass."
I'm considering the same thing with my insurance company...after 124k the
windshield is in tough shape.
