Combo switch

What generally makes combo switches go bad? Same thing as window switches?
Oxidation, thin layer of contact metal? Can on e prevent an expensive
combo switch from going bad by using lube contact cleaner, etc.? Once it
does go bad, can it be opened to tinker with?
