You could pull on the wire, sure, that would work.  Or the old
screwdriver-push-from-each-side trick, releasing each of the two catches
manually.  At least the cables are cheapish, and *very* easy to
replace.  While you're at it I recommend ordering the silly little bits
of hardware, like the plastic hollow golf tees, and replacing them
before they start crumbling.
