extended service contracts

I probably will be buying a new Avant (quattro, of course) in the next
few days and am interested in buying an extended service contract that
would take me from the 50k manufacturer's warranty period to, say,
150k.  Any advice from list members who have recent experience (good and
bad) with these contracts?  I bought my previous one thru my dealer.  Is
there any particular advantage to that?
