Extended oil change intervals

I remember years ago and some manufacturers saying now that on synthetic,
you can go up to 25,000 miles without an oil change. How much truth is
there to this? I know for a fact that in my car it can't. Syntec 5w 50. It
stops feeling right when it goes bad, plus the oil consumption. I
rememeber them saying just add to keep the crankcase full and change the
filters. At the most, I done a few hundred miles more than 3000 on
synthetic. What about factory maintainence? Does Audi allow people (esp.
the ones with turbos) to come in every 3000 miles?
