Re: '85 5KT: Fuel pump replacement question, and AWD minivans!

My 5kcst did the fuel pump thing few months ago, but it was a slower
death. Replacing it is easy as long as you are careful not to blow
yourself up in the process. Disconect battery. Pop the sender lid (3
screws), relese the pressure from the system (chances are there is no
pressure if the pump is gone), unhook the three lines going into the lid
of the sender unit. Turn the lock ring, remove it and youre basically
there. Now before lifting the sender unit make sure there is no debree
that can fall into the tank when you open it. Also make sure that your
hands are very clean. Lift the sender unit, there will be one hose that
needs to be detatched on the underside. Put your clean hand down into the
tank and locate the pump, there is like a triangular shape that serves as
a mounting bracket and is mounted on three pins with clamps hindering the
mounting (vibration) bushings which are fixed to the triangular bracket,
from liftin up and keeps the fuekl pump in place. Grab the pump and
gently try and lift it, at the same time press on each klipp one at a time
, putting uppvards pressure on the pump at that point. Pull out the pump.
two spanners to unbolt it from the fuel line, put on the new on. Refitting
is reversal of removal. As long as you have the tank open take a look
inside it and see if there is any sand or other gunk in there. I hade a
major case of varnish buildup in the tank and that was what I think ruined
my pump. I syphoned what I could see and removed most of it following up
whith a heffty gas treatment. Everything has been fine since then.

Now for price, Pep Boys ordered me a pump, took a day and cost $ 145 if I
remember corectlly.

I found that kind of steep so I whent to a U Pick A Part junk yard, pulled
a pump from a junker (86 5k) and paid $12.50. Rest is history.
