'85 5KT: Fuel pump replacement question, and AWD minivans!

The old 5KT (157K) suddenly died the other day ... sputtered to
life, coughed a couple of times, and wouldn't start again. Checked
the fuel pump today: it's getting power when you bypass the relay, but
doesn't run.

Two questions:

	1. What's a good price? (I've been quoted $190 or so).
	2. Do I need that special tool shown in Bentley (to
remove the sender) or can I get by somehow?

Any other tips, BTDT's would be greatly appreciated.

My wife's finally so fed up of this (relatively recent) unreliability
that we're springing for a new (gag!) minivan. Wish Audi made one :-(
(quattro, 4.2L V8 or turbo I-5 ... now that would be something!). We
seem inclined towards the Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge: anyone have any
experiences they'd like to share? How's their AWD, by the way?

PS: Anyone know what's the whirring sound in the engine bay when
I bypass the fp relay? I thought for a while that I had the wrong
relay ..
