Honda, BMW, Porsche cars and SAAB Headrests: No Audi Content
Pete_Kraus@emory.org writes: <<To use eliot's example, I have
no current longing to own a Honda, not even an NSX. But I recommend
them unhesitatingly to people who want reliable, competent
transportation and might otherwise buy something less so out of
ignorance or lack of interest. Unless they are receptive to learning
about the benefits of Quattro ownership, it may be better that such
people not own cars like Audi, because they are likely not to
understand or appreciate their idiosyncracies. >>
Agree completely. As the resident "car nut", I'm often asked my
suggestion as to which car my co-workers should get. These
are typically people who buy a new car every 3-5 years and expect
100% reliability during that time. I always say "Honda Accord" or
"Toyota Camry", though I would never buy one myself. The cars
will undoubtedly be "better" than whatever they're replacing and
I'm "backed up" by Consumer Distorts and the cars' consistent
but reliable mediocrity. Better safe than sorry!

Agree again. I happen to think that Porsche's are some of the
best-engineered, most capable sports cars available. But I've
never been able to bring myself to buy one due to becoming one
of the "Porsche Guys"... meaning no disrespect to true enthusiasts
who own them. But those of you who attend multi-make car shows
know the attitude I'm talking about....
Aside comment on headrests: my 1977 SAAB 99 EMS, one of my
all-time favorite cars, had the "pillows" for the open headrests.
Thought they were terrific! (Had to trade the car into an unsuspecting
used car dealer when the rear suspension detached from the car
due to terminal rust. Left turns were amazing, rights turns..... got a sweet
66 Riveria GS on an even trade. No, I won't burn individuals like this,
but dealers really should know better!)
