I had a similar problem on my '86 5kcstq after the dealer installed a
new check valve. The fuel guage stayed at 1/4 full. Apparently the float
mechanism gets hung up if it is not replaced in exactly the right spot. It
took them three trys to get the fuel guage reading again. It is probably a
good idea to index mark the cover before pulling it off the tank.
