The origins 'GT' designation

forgive me for forgetting which list presented this question first, or if
the subject has already been beaten to death, but after a little research
and a nice commentary on Speedvision, I think I have the history down pat.
As I thought, The GT designation on cars was Italian in origin and actually
stood for 'Grand Turismo'. The 1951 Lancia Aurieo (sp?) was the first car to
sport a GT badge. Fangio loved the car so much he bought one for his daily
driver. And there you have it!
