86' 5k CSQ noise coming from the shift lever

What's up quattro's,

I am new to the list and I would like to know if anyone has experienced
a noise (sort of like a grinding)comming from their manual gear shift? 
The noise just started and seems to be getting worse. It only happens
when the car is moving, once I slow down to almost a stop it goes away.
I think I will have to take it to the dealer, because I haven't located
a reputable service shop near my home (Sacramento, CA).  If anyone has
any ideas about the source of this noise or a shop in Sacramento who
might want to get my business (great car, but it needs some
tlc/maintenance), i'd appreciate hearing from you.
