Whatever the hell 'steer into the skid' means... they don't tell you
that either; at least at no time in any instruction I have received
was it explained. At a skid pad in England, the instructor
pretty much said forget about it since you'll never be able
to work it out en an emergency situation. His basics were:
Remove the source of the skid
and 'steer where you wanna go'.
It's sure better than 'Oh Sh*t, steer where?'... too late.
That was a fun course - he'd roll tires out in front of you
which you had to dodge and when you got dodging one tire down,
he'd have a helper roll another from the opposite side!
Final exercise was a 'cops and robbers' chase where he would chase
you around the skid pad. You 'lost' if you span out or he
caught you. All this was done in beat up RWD cars which
probably wouldn't pass an MOT.
Without comment as to suitability, his emergency braking method was:
'lock 'em up'
look for an escape route (don't stare at what you are about to hit)
steer for it
let off the brakes
when you are pointed where you want to go, lock 'em up again...
Repeat until out of trouble.
