Well, now the ur-quattro's back I can tackle the problems on 'er indoors' car, 
can't I?

Well, actually, I _have_ to.  
 
Anyway - done the vacuum advance and unblocked (with a blowtorch) the 
breathers.  Looking around at the rest ...
 
There's a vacuum switch mounted on the firewall, fed by a 'T' off the vacuum 
advance line.  Odd behaviour, though - stays open no matter what the input 
vacuum (from 0 to 0.8 bar) but closes momentarily when the vacuum is completely 
removed.  Is this normal behaviour?
 
2144cc JS engine, 4+E manual.

P.S. Not kidding about the blowtorch.
