Sean:
POINT 1
The vent hose is for the hydrogen gas(a by product of charging) to be
vented off safely outside the car into the atmosphere. If it is not
connected the hydrogen builds up under the seat and inside the car. One
day you're driving along and either switch on an electrical device or
somehow set off a small static electricity type spark and POOF your Audi
does its best imitation of the Hindenberg disaster of 1938. This sort of
thing can ruin your entire day. Please find a battery with the correct
vent hose connection and connect it. I really enjoy your posts and would
like to continue reading them for a few more years.
POINT 2
Yes unfortunately the battery-under-the-seat is great for weight
distribution and longer life (its a much friendlier environment under there
than under the hood) but maintenance does get neglected when it requires
unscrewing two bolts to remove the back seat to get at the battery. I have
replaced my two bolts with small wing nut type screws for easier access.
Even still I rarely check it during the winter...too cold!
