AUDI 500 SEL

To all:
I have just bought my third Audi - this time a 500 SEL 2,8 A/T with 95000Km
on the clock.
The car is in good nick but I managed only approximately 190Km out of her
when she should be able to do 230Kph quite easily - what would you say
could the reason be for her lack of performance. I was informed that it
could have something to do with a governer chip in the computer. Is this
something that can easily be overwritten or removed? What will the
consequences be?
