Flushing is essential; it gets rid of water which causes rust.

What lasts for the car lifetime:
Calipers - maybe.
Master cylinders - probably not.
Steel brake lines - probably.
Rubber brake hoses - NO!

SLM (who just replaced a brake hose w/a bubble in it this weekend......)
