Ephraim,  

I might be your catalytic converter.  The ceramic may have come loose.  I just
replaced 2 (twin on a 93 90) to the tune of $1300 and my labor.  The dealer
(for fun) gave me a cost of $2500 for the original Leistritz converters +
labor, which I did not even ask for a figure.  I doubt that your 87 would be
even close to that if that is what your rattle is. 
A quick check I did (while the car is cold!) - got under and hit the
converters a couple of times with whatever, fist, mallet, and I got the
marbles sound.
