My 83 5kt did both at various times near the end of it's life - stick
open (that really sucked) and stick closed - not so bad but still a PITA
- you have to drive without flooring it, can't activate kickdown
(slush), can't really push it.  The instant I started reading your post
I thought, sounds like waste gate stuck closed...
