The bearings on conventional turbos are solid bushing types. Non roller.
The ball bearing one are, as the name implies, ball bearing supported
centre shaft versions. There are ceramic versions that claim non
lubrication needed, but I've only seen it on a wide scale in centrifugal
superchargers. Garrett made a model in late '87 for the Buick GNX
(ASC/MacLaren) with a ceramic impeller. I can't testify to if the ball
bearing supported versions actually do spool appeciably faster or not.
Common sense says yes. HKS is making one, too. It kind of seems that KKK
might be lagging behind in technology, but making very good basic turbos
with no frills.
