odd noises from turn signals

Last week in Denver during one of our classic "glad I have
a quattro'' snow days, I ran into a wierd electric gremlin on our outer loop
freeway.  My '89 200TQ turn signals started buzzing wierd upon use and then
the windshield wipers stopped (not cool--thank goodness for
RainX!).  The wipers would start again after some laboriously
effort, so I just left them on once they restarted and did not use
my turn signals anymore. Felt like a true SUV or Texan driver during
this time! 8{)  Home safely, I thought the gremlin was just a transient,
activated by wet snow, lights on and a new battery-- I give up.

Anyway the turn signals are now sporadically making that noise
and I am wondering what electrical relay has gone south.   Anybody
been here before?  Thanks in advance to those who respond

ps After doing the bomb tests posted last week I have another
project to attend to, along with my drivers door lock .  But I do
love this car...
